Music in the Shape of a Quilt is one in a projected series of compositions in which I am exploring the concept of expressing physical/natural/visual objects or scenes aurally in music. In Quilt, the music is structured like a quilt by being constructed out of only a few patterns, each of which is repeated backwards ('retrograde', in ComposerSpeak), upside down ('inversion') and upside down and backwards ('retrograde inversion'). Each square of the quilt is two measures of 4/4 meter.
